What is ibogaine?
Ibogaine is a psychoactive indole alkaloid derived from the iboga root, a shrub associated with Gabon and parts of Central Africa. It is distinct from conventional medications used in addiction treatment because its acute psychological effects can be prolonged and intense.
The compound is commonly discussed within psychedelic therapy, yet it affects more than perception. Ibogaine and its metabolite noribogaine are believed to interact with multiple receptors and systems in the central nervous system. Its complex pharmacology is one reason simple claims about a “reset” should be treated carefully.
A useful starting point is the overview of ibogaine’s history and chemistry, paired with attention to the lack of broad medical approval. A spiritual experience or vivid dream-like state may be meaningful to a person, but it is not, by itself, evidence of safe or lasting addiction recovery.
How ibogaine works for alcohol addiction
Ibogaine is believed to influence brain chemistry involving dopamine, serotonin, and glutamate, systems that can be dysregulated in alcohol use disorder. Researchers also discuss kappa-opioid receptors and other neurobiological pathways that may relate to craving reduction and withdrawal symptoms.
The active metabolite noribogaine has a longer half-life, potentially extending effects after administration. That does not establish a therapeutic window or a safe dosage for any individual. Medical history, cardiovascular health, liver function, kidney function, and psychiatric conditions can materially change risk.
